"Beyond the Malachite Hills:
A life of Colonial Service and Business in the New Africa"
by Dr Jonathan Lawley
“For anyone interested in Africa, its recent history and its future, Dr Lawley’s book is a must.
His analysis of what has happened to Zimbabwe since independence is penetrating, comprehensive and
objective. His experience tells him that Africans are just as capable as people elsewhere and can
quickly learn how to manage and to lead given the right training and that we should promote trade and
investment vigorously as well as providing training and technical help. In short we in Britain and
elsewhere should stop patronising Africa, put aside any remaining racial strains and look to a more
positive future together as partners in the evolution of Africa.”
The Rt Hon the Lord Luce KG GCVO
“Lawley, is not writing about the end in Africa, but about Africa’s future. This is an inspiring piece of
writing because it not only expressed hope, but also offers practical advice on converting hope into reality.”
Prof Kenneth Ingham OBE MC, Vice-President of the Royal African Society
“It makes a major contribution to understanding Africa for people outside, and accounts for your unique
understanding and grasp of the situations and the times of which you write.”
Wilf Mbanga, The Zimbabwean
"What a wonderful book! Beyond the Malachite Hill should be read by every diplomat setting off on an Africa
posting, not to mention well-meaning aid workers and gap-year students."
Michael Holman, Africa editor - Financial Times, 1984 - 2002

Africa's needs
- To overcome a dependency mentality arising from historical stereotyping, self-stereotyping and discrimination.
- To recognise the futility and dangers of window dressing and over promotion.
- To recognise the importance that real decision-making should reflect local needs and local realities.
- To find ways to develop the effective managers that Africa needs.
